I’ve Been Around the Block

Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been in this ecommerce game since before it was cool. Back in ’98, when I was working at a tiny shop called TechGadgets.com (rip), we were shipping out dial-up modems. Dial-up! Can you even imagine?

Fast forward to now, and I’ve seen it all. The highs, the lows, the scams, the succesfully (yeah, I know) executed ideas. And I’m here to tell you what actually works.

Why Most Ecommerce Advice is Garbage

You know what grinds my gears? All those so-called experts spouting off about ‘the ecommerce landscape’ and ‘navigating the market’.

Look, I’ll tell you right now. Most of that stuff is garbage. It’s either too generic to be useful or so niche it only applies to 0.5% of businesses.

And don’t even get me started on those ‘comprehensive guides’. Honestly, who has time to read a 5000-word essay on ‘how to optimize your checkout process’? (Not that I’m bitter about the time I wasted on one of those.)

The One Thing That Matters

You want to know the real secret? It’s not about fancy algorithms or perfect SEO or even having the best product.

It’s about people.

I remember this one time, about three months ago, I was having coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Marcus. He runs a little shop selling handmade candles. Nothing fancy, right?

But here’s the thing – he knows his customers. He talks to them. He remembers their names, their preferences, their birthdays. And guess what? His business is thriving.

Meanwhile, I see these big corporations spending millions on ads and still can’t figure out why their conversion rates are in the toilet.

Community Events Local Activities

You wanna know what Marcus does? He hosts community events local activities. He invites his customers over, they chat, they laugh, they buy candles. It’s not rocket science, folks.

And it’s not just Marcus. I’ve seen this work for all sorts of businesses. From the mom-and-pop shop around the corner to the online store selling vintage vinyl.

People want to feel connected. They want to support businesses that care about them. It’s that simple.

A Quick Story About Me and My Committment Issues

Okay, so I gotta tell you about this time I tried to start my own ecommerce site. It was gonna be big, you know? Selling vintage band tees. I was so excited.

But then I got lazy. I didn’t wanna deal with customer service. I didn’t wanna engage with my audience. I just wanted to sit back and watch the money roll in.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. Because, shockingly, people could tell I didn’t care. And they didn’t care to buy from me.

So yeah, I’m probably the last person who should be giving advice. But hey, at least I learned my lesson.

What You Should Do Right Now

Alright, so here’s what I want you to do. Forget about all the noise. Forget about the ‘experts’ and their fancy jargon.

Go talk to your customers. Find out what they want. Build a community around your brand. Host events, engage on social media, send personalized emails.

And for the love of all that is holy, don’t spend 36 hours trying to ‘optimize your conversion funnel’ or whatever. That stuff can wait.

Because at the end of the day, people buy from people. Not from websites, not from algorithms, not from fancy marketing campaigns.

From people.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go. My friend Sarah is hosting a little get-together at her shop downtown. She’s selling these amazing handmade soaps, and I can’t wait to check it out.
